Type

The Fatima limestone is a light beige / whiteish limestone, calciclastic to oolitic, abundantly bioclastic. The geological age of this Formation is probably the Lower Callovian (Middle Jurassic).

 

Appearance

The Fatima limestone has a light beige / whiteish colour, thin to medium grain and uniform background. It is a soft / medium natural stone in terms of hardness. It is also known as Creme de Fátima.

 

Location

The Fatima limestone is explored around the city with the same name: Fatima. Fatima is located by the main national road connecting Lisbon to Porto. This area is located in the centre of Portugal, about 150 kilometres north of Lisbon.

 

Fatima is located outside of Serra D´Aire and Candeeiros Natural Park. Unlike the other main portuguese limestones, the extraction area of the Fatima limestone is not included in the ring of limestone extraction area. Nonetheless, it is a type of limestone in great expansion and with increasing market share.
